The Mano River Union Internet Governance Forum (MRU IGF) is thrilled to announce that the 2024 edition of the event will take place from October 6 to 10 in Freetown, Sierra Leone. This pivotal gathering, which will focus on advancing internet governance in the MRU region, promises to bring together key stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, and the private sector to address pressing issues around digital transformation, internet policy, and inclusive connectivity.
As one of the sub-regional NRIs (National and Regional Initiatives) recognized by the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (UN IGF), the MRU IGF is critical in amplifying the voices of under-represented NRIs in West Africa. The MRU IGF continues to foster collaboration, innovation, and policy development that will strengthen the region’s digital ecosystem.
Peterking Quaye, Coordinator of the MRU IGF, expressed his excitement about the upcoming event and acknowledged the invaluable support of the Government of Sierra Leone and local stakeholders. “We are deeply grateful to the Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Innovation of Sierra Leone for their unwavering support and hosting this important event. This year’s MRU IGF is a crucial moment for the sub-region, and we look forward to working hand in hand with all partners to drive meaningful discussions and action on internet governance,” he stated.
The event will feature technical workshops, panel discussions, and interactive sessions focused on key areas such as cybersecurity, digital rights, infrastructure development, and digital literacy. With the inclusion of a Youth IGF side event, the forum also aims to empower young voices to shape the future of Internet governance in the MRU region.
The MRU IGF is committed to advancing the global Internet governance agenda by addressing specific regional challenges and opportunities. As Quaye emphasized, “Our work aligns closely with the global IGF’s mandate to promote an open, safe, and accessible internet for all, while also focusing on the unique needs of our sub-region. We invite stakeholders from across the globe to join us in this transformative journey.”
This year’s MRU IGF is set to be a milestone event for the Mano River Union countries, marking another step toward building a resilient and inclusive digital landscape that benefits all. The forum will not only showcase the progress made in the region but also serve as a platform for forging partnerships and advancing solutions that will shape the future of the digital economy in West Africa.
